Overview

The Zenhaven mattress is manufactured by Saatva, Inc., which also sells the Saatva innerspring mattress and the Loom & Leaf memory foam mattress.

Some of the key strengths of the Zenhaven mattress include:

  • Hefty latex layers: many mattresses that are sold online with latex foams include only a thin latex layer. The Zenhaven, on the other hand, is made with high-quality latex in every layer except the mattress cover.
  • Two-for-one firmness choice: the mattress is designed to have a different comfort layer on either side, which allows customers to flip the mattress in order to alternate between a firmer or more plush feel.
  • Strong customer service: Saatva, Inc. has an excellent reputation for customer service across all of their products, including the Zenhaven mattress. They also offer a 120 night sleep trial, which is longer than that available from many other brands.

Potential drawbacks for the Zenhaven mattress include:

  • Excessive bounce: Talalay latex is known for having a high level of springiness, and the Zenhaven is built completely with Talalay latex. For people who want more contouring and less bounce, this may not be the best choice.
  • Delivery costs: this mattress comes with white glove delivery, which costs $99. This cost is also not refundable if you decide to return the mattress.

About the Zenhaven

Zenhaven Mattress Specifications

The Zenhaven mattress is composed of 6 layers:

  • 1/2” of wool inside an organic cotton cover.
  • 1.5” of Talalay latex composed of 5 zones of varying density. This layer is built to have a gentle firm feel.
  • 3” of Talalay latex for overall support.
  • 3” of Talalay latex for overall support.
  • 1.5” of 5-zone Talalay latex but with a luxury plush feel.
  • 1/2” of wool inside an organic cotton cover.

The five-zone latex comfort layer is built by varying the size and distribution of the tiny holes within the foam, which affects the overall density and feel. In addition, the mattress is designed so that customers can flip it over if they prefer a different level of firmness (luxury plush or gentle firm).

While the company does not list the density of the foam in terms of PCF, they do indicate that the ILD of the foams ranges from 14-34. We would prefer more detailed information about the density and ILD for each comfort layer because this helps to evaluate the long-term durability of the mattress and also helps to facilitate comparison shopping.

Mattress Performance

Mattresses composed almost entirely of latex typically have very strong performance, and the Zenhaven seeks to build upon this by offering two unique comfort layers for the customer to choose between.

Support

The Zenhaven mattress is built with Talalay latex, which has a reputation for its very supportive feel and significant bounce. This resiliency of the foam helps facilitate movement in bed and helps prevent sleepers from feeling stuck in their mattress. At the same time, the latex compresses in response to pressure and can effectively relieve pressure points for people in most sleeping positions.

Durability

The Zenhaven mattress has not been on the market long enough to have hard data about its long-term durability, but in general, latex mattresses are known for holding up well. Because this mattress is composed almost entirely of latex, it does not have many weak spots that would be likely to degrade the mattress performance over time.

Firmness

You can view how the Zenhaven firmness options align with the normal firmness scale in the following image:

Zenhaven firmness

The flexibility in choosing between two different firmness options with the same supportive latex base may be an excellent option for people who are unsure of their ideal firmness preference.

Motion Transfer

Because of its bounce, Talalay latex allows more motion transfer than traditional memory foam. Nevertheless, this is unlikely to cause significant disruptions unless someone is very sensitive to movement when sleeping.

Offgassing

The Zenhaven mattresses are not compressed for delivery, and as a result, any offgassing that occurs takes place in the factory and not in your home. While there may be some initial latex smell, there is no significant odor issue associated with the Zenhaven mattresses.

Sleeping Hot

The substantial resiliency of Talalay latex prevents the deep sinking into the mattress that is the cause of most temperature regulation issues. As a result, you should not expect to sleep hot on the Zenhaven mattress.

Intimacy

Latex is widely regarded as one of the best mattress types for sex because of its springiness, and Talalay latex is especially well-known for this quality. This is a strong option to consider for people who want a mattress that facilitates sexual activity.
