King Koil, initially founded as US Mattress in 1898, is a huge mattress production company that sells mattresses under multiple different brands and in over 90 countries. This review focuses on their King Koil branded innerspring mattresses.

Some of the key strengths of the King Koil innerspring mattresses include:

  • Robust pocketed coil design: every one of the King Koil innerspring mattresses involves the use of pocketed or encased coils. This type of coil design improves mattress responsiveness while reducing motion transfer.
  • Wide assortment of choices for comfort layers: with all of the available models from King Koil, customers can select comfort layers made of different materials and with different firmness levels.

Potential drawbacks for the King Koil innerspring mattresses include:

  • Foam densities not disclosed: the King Koil mattresses use various different types of foams above the innerspring coils. While these foams have trademarked names, they don’t have detailed specifications posted. As a result, we don’t know things like the density of the foam, which would help us predict the durability of the material.
  • Only available from third party sellers: King Koil does not sell the mattresses directly, which means pricing, delivery, returns, and other logistics are coordinated through third party dealers. This creates a level of unpredictability for the customer as these policies can vary from retailer to retailer.

In addition to their innerspring offerings, King Koil also sells hybrid mattresses. Follow this link to read our reviews of King Koil hybrid options.

About the King Koil Innerspring Mattresses

King Koil Innerspring Mattress Specifications

King Koil offers 14 different innerspring mattress models. We want to note that some of these models technically fit what we would classify as “hybrid” mattresses because of the extent of their comfort layers above the innerspring core. However, because King Koil’s website lists all these models as innersprings, we are listing them in the same way in order to make things easier for you in case you need to reference further information on the King Koil site.

King Koil does not publish the density for the foam layers that are included in these mattresses. While some are listed by the company as “high-density foams,” this is not verifiable without more detailed specifications. For the Vienna models, the company also does not include a listing of the thickness of each mattress layer. Lack of detailed materials descriptions also hinders the ability to effectively compare mattress options both within this brand and with other innerspring brands.

Where It’s Made

Customer Service

King Koil has a very long history in the mattress industry and has most recently received an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Overall, their reputation for customer service is about average when compared with other major manufacturers of innerspring mattresses.

Mattress Performance

Though the comfort layers for each King Koil mattress vary, the support core is functionally the same for each of the innerspring models described here. This creates a general level of consistency among these mattress offerings with regard to support and performance. Overall, King Koil’s innerspring mattresses usually receive customer satisfaction ratings that are about average for innerspring mattresses in general.

The King Koil website also offers a sleep quiz that they call Sleep ID that you can take to help you try to identify which mattresses may best fit your needs in terms of comfort, support, and other factors.

Support

These King Koil mattresses use pocketed or encased coils to provide the base level of support offered by the mattress. Encased coils have more ability to respond proportionally to a sleeper’s weight than older or more traditional types of innerspring coils. As a result, this type of mattress can usually be counted on to provide at least an average level of support.

Another issue that directly impacts support is the design of a mattress comfort layer. Some of the King Koil models use thinner materials in the comfort layers above the innerspring coils. This may reduce the extent to which the comfort layers can effectively contour to the body or relieve pressure points, especially for sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.

King Koil mattresses have been approved by the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), which may provide added reassurance to some customers about their supportiveness.

Durability

Most of the King Koil mattresses are considered to be average to above-average with regard to durability relative to other innerspring mattresses. They can usually be counted on to provide at least 6-8 years of regular use before seriously starting to show signs of wear and tear.

Remember, though, that durability will also be influenced by the comfort layers. The thinner the comfort layers, the more pressure that will be put on the support core. In addition, without knowing the density of the foams used in the comfort layers of these mattresses, we are unable to accurately assess if they have a high likelihood of being durable.

Firmness

Each of these 14 mattress models has a different firmness level, measured on a typical firmness scale, as outlined in the table below.

Mattress Model Firmness Level
Siena Firm 7
Sydney Firm 5-6
Sydney Euro Top 3-4
Kingsley Firm 6
Kingsley Plush 3-4
Kingsley Euro Top 2-3
Montego Luxury Firm 5-6
Montego Luxury Plush 2-3
Montego Luxury Pillow Top 3-4
Athens Plush 5
Athens Firm 7
Vienna Firm 5
Vienna Plush 3-4
Vienna Euro Top 3-4

Motion Transfer

Generally speaking, innerspring mattresses permit more motion transfer than other mattress types like memory foam. The bounce from the coils can cause motion to transfer to other parts of the bed; however, pocketed coils do help to reduce this effect. Softer and more contouring foam layers above the coils can also help to reduce motion transfer. Overall, motion isolation from these mattresses is likely to be sufficient for the large majority of customers, but people especially susceptible to sleep disruptions may wish to focus on traditional memory foam for its motion isolation properties.

Offgassing

Because there is foam employed in all of these mattresses, you can expect some initial odor when the mattress first arrives and is set up in your home. In the big picture, though, only a small portion of these mattresses are foam, and this smell should not be overpowering. Any smell should not linger longer than a few hours.

Sleeping Hot

Overheating in bed usually happens when a mattress contours so closely to the body that it prevents airflow. Foam, especially memory foam, is the most notorious for this effect. In addition, a very plush mattress that a sleeper sinks into is also most likely to have this type of airflow issue. Counteracting that is the bounce-like feel of the innerspring coils. Because of this, most customers do not report major problems with sleeping hot, but people for whom this is a concern should steer away from the plushest mattress options.

Intimacy

With the base level of springiness provided by the coils used in these mattresses, the King Koil innerspring options should not cause problems for customers with an active sex life.
