King Koil started as a company in 1898 under the name US Mattress. The company produces multiple mattress brands that are licensed and sold in over 90 countries. This review focuses on the company’s hybrid mattress models.

It should be noted that King Koil, on their website, uses the terms hybrid and innerspring very loosely. Some mattresses are included by the company in both categories. In addition, the company has a section for mattresses they describe as “memory foam” mattresses, but these are also clearly hybrids with an innerspring core.

In this review, we have included all the mattresses that King Koil labels as hybrids as well as the “memory foam” models listed on their website. There is some overlap with models that the company classifies under the innerspring category. We encourage you to make sure that you are looking at the correct model name if you are visiting the King Koil website.

Some of the key strengths of the King Koil hybrid mattresses include:

  • Strong base of encased coils: the use of encased coils helps to allow each coil to operate with a higher degree of independence from the adjacent coils. This design can promote a more supportive night’s sleep with better motion isolation properties.
  • Long company track record: with nearly 120 years in business, King Koil is an established company that can point to a history of mattress development and production.

Potential drawbacks for the King Koil hybrid mattresses include:

  • Foam densities are unknown: King Koil has specialized names for the foams that they use, but they don’t share much else in the way of details about these foams. This includes the foam density, which is unknown, but which would be very useful information for evaluating these mattresses.
  • Only sold by third party retailers: King Koil does not do direct sales, so pricing, delivery, returns, and related issues are coordinated through third party sellers. This puts customers a step away from the company and makes them more dependent on the specific retailer that they buy from.

In addition to their hybrid offerings, King Koil also sells innerspring mattresses. Follow this link to read our review of the King Koil innerspring offerings.

Some information about the mattresses, such as the density for the foam layers, is not made public by King Koil. Some foams are listed by the company as “high-density foams,” but this is not verifiable without more detailed specifications. For the Vienna models, the company also does not include a listing of the thickness of each layer. Without detailed materials descriptions, it is more challenging to evaluate and compare mattresses.

Where It’s Made

The King Koil hybrid mattresses are manufactured in the USA.

Buying Logistics

Where to Buy

The King Koil hybrid mattresses are available through a number of third-party sellers. Some of these retailers have an online presence and offer King Koil mattresses there. Availability and pricing usually varies by retailer.

Sleep Trial / Refunds

Because they do not make direct sales, King Koil does not offer any sleep trial or refunds. All refunds or returns must be arranged through the seller. We strongly encourage you to get the return policy in writing and to make sure any questions that you have are answered before making a final purchase decision.

Delivery

Delivery policies can vary depending on the specific mattress you purchase and the company that you buy the mattress from. Some models may be delivered in a box to your front door. Other models may require an arranged appointment for delivery and set-up. Many King Koil dealers offer white-glove delivery, which includes setup of the new mattress and haul-away of your old mattress. White-glove delivery usually incurs additional costs.

Customer Service

King Koil has a much longer history in the mattress industry than most other companies, especially many of the newcomers to the online mattress world. King Koil has also received an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Despite this, there are still some customer complaints, as with most major brands. Overall, King Koil’s reputation for customer service is roughly average when compared with other major manufacturers of innerspring and hybrid mattresses.

Mattress Performance

The performance of the King Koil hybrid mattresses is driven by their innerspring core. The innerspring layer is then complemented by the foam layers on top of it. In reviews from customers and independent evaluators, King Koil’s mattresses usually receive about average scores. The performance of these mattresses is similar to most comparable innerspring or hybrid models made by major manufacturers.

With regard to performance, customers should be aware that the King Koil website offers a sleep quiz that they call Sleep ID. This quiz can help in selecting a mattress based on inputs related to firmness, support, and other considerations.

Support

Pocketed coils, such as those in the support core of the King Koil mattress, are individually-encased so that some of them can compress without the entire mattress compressing. In this way, the springiness of the coils combined with their ability to compress can provide a level of pressure point relief. Though it is not as responsive as a material like memory foam, an innerspring support core does usually provide an adequate amount of support for most sleepers.

Providing further support is the comfort layer of the mattress, which is what typically defines a hybrid. The inclusion of foams on top of the coils give some additional ability for the mattress to help support the body in a way that enhances spinal alignment. King Koil mattresses have been approved by the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), which may been a meaningful endorsement for some customers.

Our primary concern with regard to the support of the King Koil mattresses relates to the lack of information that we have about the foam comfort layers. If these are not higher-density foams, they may more easily “bottom out,” which can put more pressure on the coils. For some models, we don’t know the thickness of the foams, and a too-thin comfort layer can also pose major concerns for support, especially over the medium- and long-term.

Durability

The King Koil mattresses have a similar reputation for durability as most mattresses built primarily around an innerspring support core. This means that they can be expected to provide 6-8 years of daily use before showing serious signs of degradation. For some customers, they may last even longer.

That said, our concerns about lack of details for the comfort layers with regard to support also applies here when discussing durability. If the comfort layers are too thin or not dense enough, the lifespan of the mattress is likely to be shorter. Unfortunately, we do not have the requisite information from the company to evaluate this.

Firmness

Each of these 10 mattress models has a specific feel, measured on a typical firmness scale, as outlined in the table below.

Mattress Model Firmness
XS 10 Hybrid Firm 5-6
XS 50 Hybrid Plush 3
Monaco Euro Top 3-4
Monaco Plush 2
Montego Luxury Firm 5-6
Montego Luxury Plush 2-3
Montego Luxury Pillow Top 3-4
Athens Plush 5
Athens Firm 7
Vienna Firm 5
Vienna Plush 3-4
Vienna Euro Top 3-4

Motion Transfer

For mattresses with innerspring support cores, the bounce from the coils can lead to a higher level of motion transfer. This means that motion on one part of the mattress is felt on another part of the mattress, which can be an issue for many people who share their mattress with a partner. Though innerspring mattresses can have this characteristic, it is mostly reduced in the King Koil hybrid mattresses by the pocketed coils and by the foam layers. Unless you are very motion sensitive, we do not expect you to have significant issues with motion transfer on the King Koil hybrid mattresses.

Offgassing

The foam in the King Koil mattresses, like virtually all mattress foams, will likely have some odor when it is first removed from the box or first installed in your bedroom. This odor is not usually significant and fades away within a few hours or at the most a few days.

Sleeping Hot

Innerspring support cores help to prevent sleeping hot by having a higher level of resilience. Resilience means the mattress retakes its original shape after pressure is removed. This gives the mattress a more bouncy feel that generally prevents sinking into the bed. Without sinking into the bed, there is typically enough airflow around your body to limit heat retention. Bear in mind, though, that a very plush comfort layer may invite more of a sinking effect that could increase the risks of sleeping hot.

Intimacy

With the amount of bounce provided by the coils used in these hybrid mattresses, the King Koil hybrid mattresses should not cause disruptions to sexual activity.
