One of the newest products from Sleep Number is the it Bed, which was launched in September 2016 and represents the company’s foray into the bed-in-a-box market. The it Bed features the company’s well-known dual-chamber inflatable airbed support core, which, for the it Bed, is controlled using a smartphone app.
Some of the key strengths of the it Bed mattress include:
- Adjustable firmness: because the amount of air in the it Bed can be easily increased or decreased, customers have more control over the firmness of the mattress than with any other bed-in-a-box mattress type.
- Integrated sleep sensors: the company’s SleepIQ system is included with each it Bed, and this system provides detailed feedback about a person’s movements and heart rate during sleep. This can provide data that can be integrated with other sensors (such as fitness trackers) to help identify best practices for sleep, diet, and exercise.
Potential drawbacks for the it bed include:
- Limited track record: while Sleep Number has been producing mattresses for many years, the it Bed has only recently come to market. Because its production and shipping is different than the traditional mattresses made by Sleep Number, more time is needed to better evaluate how it compares to the company’s other mattress lines.
- Short sleep trial that is not risk free: the company only offers a 30 night sleep trial — far less than the 100+ nights offered by most bed-in-a-box companies — and if you decide to return the mattress, you have to pay a $99 fee.
Sleep Number also produces a number of other models of airbeds. You can click here to read our reviews of those models.

About the it Bed Mattress
it Bed Mattress Specifications
The it mattress is built with two main layers. The bottom layer is the 6” air chamber that can be inflated or deflated using the SleepIQ smartphone application. The top layer is 2” of foam that acts as a comfort layer. These two layers are covered by a 99% polyester and 1% elastan knit cover.
The mattress plugs into the wall and also has an electronics unit that is controlled via Bluetooth by a smartphone application. Sensors to track heart rate, breathing, and movement are built into the mattress and send information to the application.
Sleep Number does not disclose the density of the foam that is used in the comfort layer. The foam density helps to provide information about the durability of the foam, and without this information, it is harder to compare this mattress to others that are available on the market.
Where It’s Made
The it mattress is made in the USA.
Where To Buy
The it mattress is available directly from the company’s website.
Sleep Trial / Refunds
Sleep Number offers a 30 day sleep trial for the it Bed. During that 30-day period, you can initiate a return if you are not satisfied with the mattress. If you decide to return the it Bed, the company will pick up the mattress and will deduct a $99 fee from your refund.
Delivery of the it Bed is free via UPS in the continental United States. If you choose to purchase the company’s base for the it Bed, there is a $99 fee for delivery of that product.
There is no setup or installation included with delivery of the mattress. Instead, it is delivered to your doorstep in a box. Inside the box, the mattress is compressed and sealed in plastic packaging. When you remove the mattress from the packaging, it inflates to reach its full size. You then install the electronics, plug the mattress into the wall, and then connect with the smartphone app. This entire process typically takes about 15 minutes.
Sleep Number offers a 2-year warranty on the it Bed covering both the mattress itself and the electronic components. If there are any defects in materials or workmanship during this time period, the company will repair or replace the mattress. Full warranty details are available at
Like many other major mattress sellers, Sleep Number (and its parent company, Select Comfort Corp.) has a mixed reputation for customer service. While the company appears to work to support customers, there have also been many complaints lodged about the company. Select Comfort has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. It remains to be seen whether the company’s support for the it Bed varies at all from its support for its other mattresses.
The it Bed is still new to the market and thus has limited data from verified sources about its overall performance. While Sleep Number beds previously have developed a strong reputation, it is too early to know whether the it Bed will match that level of success.
Because each mattress can be adjusted in real time, the Sleep Number beds offer a high level of support. This is true especially for couples who may have different firmness and support preferences as they can each select their own individual sleep number. However, there are some early reports about the it Bed that indicate that it may not be as effective in providing support relative to other Sleep Number air beds.
The it bed has not been on the market long enough to evaluate its overall durability. In general, the Sleep Number mattresses have an average track record of durability. However, unlike other mattresses, there are more components — such as the electronics — that can potentially malfunction and affect the bed’s performance. Some customers have reported issues with leaks from the air chambers.
With the two air chambers that can be inflated or deflated with the push of a button, the it Bed offers significant flexibility to customers in terms of flexibility.
Airbeds typically have more motion transfer than other mattress types like memory foam, latex, or hybrids. Independent testers have found this to be the case with the it Bed. While the foam layer on the it Bed can help to reduce motion transfer, customers who are very motion-sensitive may want to opt for a different type of mattress with stronger motion isolation properties (such as memory foam).
While not transfer of motion itself, some customers do report disruption from noise of the chambers inflating or deflating. This noise transfer may be a consideration for people who know they are very sensitive to sounds while sleeping.
Sleep Number beds do not typically have issues with offgassing, but the it Bed, because it is shipped compressed, may have some initial new mattress smell after unboxing. Any smell is not harmful and should dissipate quickly given the relatively thin layer of foam.
Airbeds like the it Bed do not conform to the body to the same degree as many other mattress types, and as a result, do not usually cause issues with sleeping hot. The ability to keep the mattress inflated to a level that prevents sinking into the mattress can also help prevent overheating.
The rapid adjustability of the it Bed allows it to be inflated to a level that does not interfere with sexual activity.
Sleep Number is the predominant company in the mattress industry selling airbeds. The following table shows how the it Bed from Sleep Number compares to some other popular mattresses on the market.
