The intelliBED mattresses are luxury models that employ a specific type of comfort layer, known as a buckling column gel, on top of a base of innerspring coils.
Some of the key strengths of the intelliBED mattress include:
- Innovative comfort layer: each intelliBED model features the company’s proprietary buckling column gel as its top layer. Many sleepers perceive this material to have the responsiveness of memory foam but with greater resilience.
- Long track record: intelliBED has been selling mattresses for well over a decade and has much more longevity in the industry than many of the companies selling mattresses online.
Potential drawbacks for the intelliBED mattress include:
- High price tag and shipping costs: these mattresses come in at a luxury price point that is out of reach for most customers. In addition to the price for the mattress itself, shipping is expensive, and additional accessories keep adding to the total price.
- Restricted return policy: the company only offers a 60-day return policy, and you are not allowed to return the mattress in the first 30 days. In addition, the sleep trial is only available if you purchase a $90 mattress protector, which you cannot return or receive a refund for. The company also does not refund your initial shipping charge if you decide to return the mattress.
- Vague specifications: while the company has images of their mattresses and provides some details about the materials, they do not disclose important information such as the density of the foams that are utilized in the mattress.

About the intelliBED Mattress
intelliBED Mattress Specifications
Each intelliBED mattress has a slightly different overall design and composition; however, there are a few commonalities in each model. Each has a comfort layer made with the company’s proprietary Gel Matrix foam. This is a type of material is known as a buckling column gel. In a buckling column gel, the foam is molded into squares that compress and respond as pressure is applied. In addition, each mattress also has a base layer made of innerspring coils. A more detailed breakdown of the componentry of each mattress can be found in the table below.
For each mattress, the company also offers a Lo Motion model, which involves minor design modifications intended to reduce motion transfer.
The company does not disclose the specifications for the foams that are used in the mattress. For example, the density of the foam transition layer is not available. They also do not disclose the thickness of the layers in the GelElite mattress. Foam density can be an important indicator of the quality and durability of the mattress. Moreover, not knowing the mattress specifications limits your ability to reliably comparison shop.

The intelliBED mattress comes with a either a 20 or 30 year warranty depending on the model and depending on whether the mattress is used with an adjustable frame. During the first 10 years of the warranty period, the company will repair or replace the mattress if it has defects in materials or workmanship. After 10 years, the warranty is pro-rated. Any transportation costs associated with a warranty repair or replacement are the responsibility of the customer. Full warranty details are available online at http://www.intellibed.com/warranty/.
intelliBED was originally founded in 2000 as Advanced Comfort Technology. The company has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. As with many longstanding mattress companies, there are some complaints about the company’s return and warranty policies, which can be restrictive for customers and can include unforeseen costs.
The intelliBED mattresses offer a unique combination of innerspring coils and a comfort layer with buckling column gel. Though it comes at a high price point, for many sleepers, this provides an extremely comfortable and supportive mattress.
The intelliBED models offer quality support both through the innerspring base and through the Gel Matrix top layer. Innerspring coils provide a foundation of support and bounce and help to reduce any areas in which more pressure is placed on the comfort layer. The Gel Matrix comfort layer is both highly responsive and highly resilient, which can work to eliminate pressure points and keep the spine in a comfortable position.
One caveat to this is that buckling column gels may not offer nearly the same level of support to heavier sleepers. Because of the way in which the gel is designed to collapse, larger people may feel as though this layer bottoms out on them, reducing their support and putting more strain on the other mattress layers.
A key way in which we assess durability is by examining the internal components of a mattress, including the density of the foam that is used. intelliBED does not disclose the density of their foam transition layer. Because a mattress is only as strong as its weakest link, this gives us pause in trusting the overall durability of the intelliBED models.
That said, the company has been selling these mattresses for many years, and while there are some customer complaints, their overall track record is strong when it comes to durability.
The three intelliBED models have different firmness levels based on the typical firmness scale. You can see how they compare in the table below.
For most sleepers, the Gel Matrix material performs well when it comes to motion isolation because it only responds where pressure is applied. However, for larger sleepers, there may be significantly more motion transfer because they may elicit a more widespread response from the buckling column gel.
As with many mattresses that include foam layers, you can expect some initial new mattress smell from the intelliBED models. However, this is likely to be less than many all-foam and memory foam mattresses. Any odor is not harmful and should go away within a few hours to a few days.
Buckling column gels like the Gel Matrix do not envelop the body in the same way as traditional memory foam, so most people should not expect to sleep hot on an intelliBED mattress.
The Gel Matrix comfort layer has a significant amount of resilience, which means that it bounces back to its original shape quickly once pressure is removed. Except for when very heavy pressure is applied, this usually prevents feeling stuck in the bed in a way that would inhibit sexual activity. Even though this is not an issue for most people, shoppers focused on an optimal mattress for sex may prefer a latex mattress or an innerspring model with a lot of bounce.
The table below provides a comparison of some mattresses with similarities to the intelliBED mattress in terms of construction and feel.
