Hyphen launched its foam mattress in 2015 with the goal of offering a straightforward mattress but with its own foam design for its top comfort layer.

Some of the key strengths of the Hyphen mattress include:

  • Specialty polyfoam formulation: for people who may have had bad experiences with memory foam or latex but who are still looking for a foam mattress, the proprietary Hyphen foam may offer a middle ground. The company promotes their foam as a balance between the contouring of memory foam and the bounce of latex.

Potential drawbacks for the Hyphen mattress include:

  • Limited track record: there is not sufficient customer data or history of mattress performance to be able to know whether the Hyphen mattress meets its goals of offering a mattress that is supportive, resilient, comfortable, and durable.
  • Only one firmness option: the Hyphen mattress is only offered in one firmness level — medium-firm — which makes it a poor choice for people who want a very plush or very firm feel.

Buying Logistics

Where to Buy

The Hyphen mattress is available directly from the company’s website and on Amazon.

Sleep Trial / Refunds

Hyphen offers a 100 night sleep trial for each mattress. At any point during this time period, you can contact the company to return the mattress and receive a full refund. If you decide to return the mattress, Hyphen will arrange for it to be picked up from your home.

Keep in mind that if you purchase the mattress through Amazon, you may need to work with Amazon instead of Hyphen for any customer support issues. The return policy and sleep trial may have different terms, so make sure to check with Amazon and Hyphen before purchasing.

Shipping of the Hyphen mattress is free within the continental U.S. The mattress usually arrives within 2-7 days after an order is placed.

There is no haul-away or installation included with mattress delivery. The mattress is delivered as a bed-in-a-box, which means that it is compressed, sealed in plastic packaging, placed in a box, and shipped to your doorstep. When you remove the mattress from the box and packaging, it expands to reach its full height and firmness.

The Hyphen mattress comes with a 20-year warranty that covers defects in materials and manufacturing. During the first 10 years of the warranty, the company will repair or replace a defective mattress at no charge. During years 11-20, the company will repair or replace the mattress, but the customer is responsible for a $99 transportation fee. Full warranty details are available at https://hyphensleep.com/warranty.

Customer Service

We do not have sufficient data to confidently assess the customer service level of Hyphen. We are not aware of many reports of issues with customer service, but the company has not been in business long enough for us to know how they will handle support and service issues over the long-haul. The company does not have a rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Mattress Performance

The Hyphen mattress is composed of three different layers of polyfoam including the topmost layer, which the company describes as Hyphen foam. The goal of the design of this Hyphen foam is to strike a balance between responsiveness and bounce.

Unfortunately, there is not a large enough sample size of verified customer reviews or analysis by independent testers to determine whether the company has truly hit the mark on this balance.

The Hyphen foam is an unproven variation of polyfoam that is proprietary to this company. Given its limited use, it is challenging to estimate its overall supportiveness. The company states that this foam is able to relieve the main pressure points in the body without causing people to sink deeply into the mattress.

Our primary concern with the Hyphen’s design is that the thickness of the topmost foam layer is only 2”. A thin top layer can create an increased burden on the supporting layers and can be especially problematic for heavier sleepers and for people with major pressure points (such as people with very broad shoulders who sleep on their sides).

The Hyphen mattress has not been in use for a long enough time period to know whether its performance will hold up over many years.

Without a history of use to evaluate, we consider the density of the foams that are used in this mattress. Higher-density foams are much more likely to stand the test of time with regular use. The foams used in the Hyphen mattress are roughly average for the industry. We expect that the Hyphen mattress should last for at least 6-8 years, although this lifespan may be reduced for people who put more wear-and-tear on a mattress (such as couples, heavier people, people with major pressure points, and people who share a bed with a large pet).

The Hyphen mattress is offered in only one firmness level. It is medium-firm and falls at around a 6-7 on the typical firmness scale.

Motion Transfer

The Hyphen does not offer the same amount of contouring hug as traditional memory foam, and consequently, it will transfer more motion than that type of material. Despite this, a small amount of motion transfer does not usually cause major disruptions for most sleepers. We do not expect motion transfer to be a big problem for the majority of people who use this mattress.

As is the case with basically every foam mattress on the market that is compressed for delivery, you can expect a light odor from the Hyphen after unboxing it and removing it from its packaging. Remember, though, that this is not dangerous or harmful and that the smell should go away within a few hours.

Sleeping Hot

The Hyphen mattress does not permit the same amount of sinking as a memory foam mattress, and it is this sinking that it normally the cause of overheating during sleep. Without excessive sink, it is less likely that airflow around the body will be restricted enough to cause excess heat buildup.

The medium-firm feel and bounce from the top two layers of the Hyphen should be sufficient to prevent any disruption of sexual activity on this mattress.
