Overview

The GhostBed mattress was launched in 2015 and is manufactured by Nature’s Sleep, which has been in the mattress business since 2001. The GhostBed is a viable option for consumers looking for the contouring support of memory foam and the bounce of latex.

Some of the key strengths of the GhostBed include:

  • Multi-layered foams: by combining both memory foam and latex, the GhostBed strives to get the best of both worlds. A memory foam layer offers responsive support while a top layer of latex maintains springiness and prevents sinking deeply into the mattress.
  • Aerated latex: the latex layer is designed with small indentations that do not affect the firmness of the latex but that allow it to prevent excessive heat buildup while sleeping.
  • High-density foams: many all-foam mattresses on the market cut corners by using very low-density foams in the support or comfort layers. The GhostBed meets or exceeds our expectations for foam density in all three layers.

Potential drawbacks for the GhostBed mattress include:

  • Limited track record: even though Nature’s Sleep has been in the mattress industry for many years, this is their first foray into this specific market. Since the GhostBed has been available only since late 2015, we don’t have solid information about the performance of this mattress over the long term.
  • Single firmness option: the GhostBed has only one model, and there are no options to customize the firmness level for your specific preferences. If you are looking for a mattress with a plush feel or something that is very firm, the GhostBed is unlikely to meet your needs.

About the GhostBed

GhostBed Mattress Specifications

Unlike many companies in the mattress industry, GhostBed publishes detailed information about their mattress specifications. The GhostBed has three foam layers. The bottom layer is made up of 7.5” of 2 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) density support foam, the middle layer is 2” of 4 PCF gel-infused memory foam, and the top layer is 1.5” of 3.5 PCF aerated synthetic latex. The latex is made with the Dunlop process, which typically gives a firmer feel than other types of latex.

Customer Service

Because of their short tenure, it is difficult to fully assess GhostBed’s reputation for customer service. The company has a D+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, but this is based on limited customer reports. Nature’s Sleep, GhostBed’s parent company, has been in business since 2011.

Mattress Performance

The GhostBed has been rising among the ranks of online direct-to-consumer mattresses with its combination of latex and memory foam. Customer feedback has been generally positive, which is not surprising given the specifications of the mattress construction.

Support

GhostBed’s use of three types of foam — support foam, memory foam, and latex foam — help to create a strong foundational level of support. While memory foam increases the amount of contouring to each individual’s body, the top layer of latex enhances the bounce of the mattress and prevents excessive sinking. Reviews of this mattress confirm that the GhostBed seems to have struck a solid balance between contouring and bounce.

Durability

While the GhostBed has not been on the market long enough to conclusively evaluate its long-term durability, its use of foams with higher densities (measured in pounds per cubic foot or PCF) increases the likelihood that these mattresses will stand the test of time.

Firmness

GhostBed only offers one level of firmness, which rates between a 6 and a 7. While this is a mid-range level of firmness that works for most sleepers, this is probably not the right choice for people who want a plusher feel or who prefer a very firm mattress. Most GhostBed customers have found the mattress to be comfortable in a range of sleeping positions.

Motion Transfer

Latex comfort layers tend to have solid motion isolation qualities, and that is also the case with the GhostBed. While some customers have reported that motion isolation could be improved, most sleepers sharing a bed are likely to be satisfied with the GhostBed when it comes to motion transfer.

Offgassing

As with almost all foam mattresses, there may be some smell as the mattress reaches its full size, but customer reports do not indicate that there is likely to be any significant or persistent offgassing.

Sleeping Hot

The GhostBed has two features designed to improve its cooling properties. The first is aerated latex, which is intended to improve airflow through the mattress. The second is that the memory foam layer is gel-infused. Reports are mixed about how much this enhances cooling, but compared to most foam mattresses, the GhostBed is well-regarded for not sleeping hot.

Intimacy

Because of the bounciness of its latex top layer, the GhostBed should not create any obstacles for sexual activity.
