Essentia was founded in 2006 and focuses on producing mattresses composed of natural materials. The Essential Performance and Wholebody Recovery lines of mattresses both use a comfort layer made up of the company’s specialty “natural memory foam.”
Some of the key strengths of the Essentia memory foam mattresses include:
- High-end organic materials: Essentia uses high-quality materials and well-regarded manufacturing processes to develop these mattresses. For customers looking to avoid traditional memory foam and many of the chemicals involved in its production, the Essentia line of natural memory foam may be a compelling option.
Potential drawbacks for the Essentia memory foam mattresses include:
- High cost: as you might expect, specialty mattress materials come with a higher price tag. The Essentia mattresses are considerably more expensive than most other foam and latex mattresses on the market.
- Short sleep trial that is not risk free: unlike most direct-to-consumer mattress companies that offer a sleep trial of 100 or more nights, Essentia only offers a 60-night trial. In addition, you do not get a full refund if you return the mattress — the company subtracts 9% of your purchase price as a transportation fee.
Essentia also produces two mattresses that utilize only organic latex for their comfort and support layers. For more about those mattresses, visit our Essentia Latex Mattress Review.

About the Essentia Memory Foam Mattresses
Essentia Memory Foam Mattress Specifications
All of the Essentia memory foam mattresses have some similar design elements. All of them share the following three layers:
- Organic cotton cover
- A Bucaneve wrap beneath the cover that is designed to reduce friction and wear on the other mattress materials
- A dovetailed cotton base layer that is intended to limit sliding or movement of the foam.
All of these mattresses also include the company’s natural memory foam. While they refer to this as “memory foam” because of its feel, it is not the same memory foam that is used in countless other mattresses. In truth, that type of memory foam cannot be produced with truly natural or organic processes. Instead, Essentia has developed a foam pouring process that uses Hevea milk, which is the white sap of rubber tree. To the Hevea milk, they add essential oils, water, and plant extracts, and this material is then processed, poured, and cut for use in these mattresses.
The company also advertises its Wholebody Recovery system with the Beausommet, Dormeuse, and Dormeuse Fior mattresses. While this is referred to as a patented technology, the company is short on details about what it actually entails or how it advances individual health or wellness. From the available information, it appears to primarily increase the resilience of the foam. We are not aware of any reliable scientific studies that demonstrate specific health benefits from this system.

Where It’s Made
The Essentia mattress is manufactured in Canada.
Where To Buy
The Essentia mattresses are available for purchase online through the company’s website. They are also available in about 20 brick-and-mortar stores in the US and Canada.
Sleep Trial / Refunds
Essentia offers a 60-day sleep trial on its latex mattresses. During this 60 day period, you can return the mattress for a refund or exchange if you are not satisfied with the product.
If you decide to return the mattress, the company will coordinate with you to pick it up and haul it away from your home. It is important to note, though, that the company subtracts a transportation fee — 9% of your purchase price — from your refund.
Essentia offers free shipping to the continental United States and Canada. The mattress can arrive in as few as 2-5 business days when the purchased product is in stock.
The company offers both standard and white glove delivery. Standard delivery includes transportation of the mattress to your front door. The mattress is roll-packed, which means that it is compressed in plastic packaging and placed inside a box. When you remove the mattress from the packaging, it expands to its full size. Standard delivery does not include any setup or haul-away of your old mattress.
White glove delivery includes installation of the mattress in the room of your choosing. White glove delivery can also include haul-away of your old mattress as long as you specify this request in your order process. White glove service costs $249 unless you purchase certain bed bases from the company, in which case the cost of white glove service is included.
The Essentia mattresses come with a 20-year warranty that covers any defects in materials or workmanship. This 20-year period applies to the mattress components only; the cover is only covered for a 2-year period.
During the first 10 years of the warranty, the company will repair or replace a defective mattress. During the last 10 years, this is prorated based on the year and initial purchase price.
The warranty does not cover any transportation costs associated with a warranty claim.

Overall, Essentia has received a solid but not spectacular reputation for its post-sales customer service. Most customers have found the company to do an effective job in providing support when issues arise. The company does not have a rating from the Better Business Bureau.
Memory foam has a long track record as a material that provides excellent support in a mattress comfort layer. Because this is a nontraditional type of memory foam, the expected performance of the Essentia memory foam mattresses depends in large part on how effectively the company has been able to mimic the feel of traditional memory foam with its natural process.
Overall, Essentia mattresses have been well-reviewed with regard to their supportiveness. The design of the mattress and feel is well-suited to respond to the body’s main pressure points and help maintain spinal alignment and support. More customer reviews are necessary, though, before it can be adequately compared to traditional memory foam.
Essentia claims to have achieved superb durability that is borne out through extensive internal stress-testing of their mattresses. The Essentia natural memory foam has not been on the market to assess its long-term durability, but customer reports to date have not indicated any serious issues.
Each model of the Essentia memory foam mattresses has a different firmness level. You can see where each of these models falls on the typical firmness scale in the table below.
|Mattress Model||Firmness Level|
Customer reports indicate that the Essentia memory foam does not isolate motion quite as well as traditional memory foams. Despite this, there is sufficient motion isolation to avoid problems for most sleepers. People who are extremely sensitive to motion by a pet or partner, though, may find that the Essentia mattresses permit too much motion transfer.
Given their use of natural materials, the Essentia mattresses do not have any major issues with offgassing. While some new mattress smell can be expected right after it is unboxed, this is not harmful and should go away very quickly.
The conforming nature of memory foam causes some people to sleep hot on this material. The greater the amount of sink in the mattress, generally the more heat retention that occurs as a result of limited airflow. While sleeping hot is not a common complaint for the Essentia memory foam mattresses, customers who know that they sleep hot may prefer a firmer model or may want to opt for a different mattress type that does not utilize memory foam in the comfort layer.
Memory foam mattresses can inhibit sexual activity because of their significant responsiveness. As the mattress compresses in response to pressure, it can make it harder to move into a new position, especially if the mattress is very soft. Inhibited movement on the bed can disrupt sex. Customers who are looking for the optimal mattress for sex may prefer a latex or innerspring mattress or may prefer to at least choose a memory foam model with more firmness and resilience.
The table below provides a comparison of some mattresses with similarities to the Essentia mattress in terms of construction and feel.
