Eight started as a company in 2014 and a few years later began selling one of the first non-wearable sleep trackers. The company now also sells a mattress that can be coupled with its sleep tracking product. The Eight smart mattress is a combination of their mattress and sleep tracker.

Some of the key strengths of the Eight smart mattress include:

  • Innovative sleep technology: the Eight sleep tracker goes over the top of the mattress and both collects data and allows the sleeper to control elements of the mattress from their smartphone. For people who like to be on the leading edge of technology and who want to analyze data about their sleep patterns, the Eight sleep products are an exciting development.
  • Mix of bounce and contour: the Eight smart mattress has two different comfort layers. One provides the bounce or spring associated with latex while the second layer offers memory foam for some additional contouring.

Potential drawbacks for the Eight smart mattress include

  • Limited track record: the Eight smart mattress is still a new entrant into the mattress market, and as a result, there is a lack of verified reviews and no data about its long-term performance.
  • Still early days for sleep tracking: sleep science is complicated, and while sleep trackers can gather certain types of data, there is still a lot to learn about what that data means and how it can be used by any individual sleeper.

About the Eight Smart Mattress

Eight Smart Mattress Specifications

The Eight smart mattress is built with five layers. The top layer, which is also the technology layer, is not built into the mattress but is a cover that goes over the rest of the mattress. This technology acts as a sleep tracker, monitoring your movement to understand sleep trends. It also helps control bed temperature, morning alarms, and allows for integration with other WiFi-enabled home devices.

The internal components of the bed are divided into four layers. The top is 2” of a latex-like foam. The second layer is 2” of memory foam. The third layer is 2” of transitional polyfoam. The bottom layer is 4” of support polyfoam.

Buying Logistics

Where To Buy

The Eight smart mattress is available online directly from the company. The company also has one showroom in New York City.

Sleep Trial / Refunds

Eight offers a 100 night sleep trial. The company expects customers to try the mattress and sleep tracker for 30 nights. After that point, customers can return either the sleep tracker, the mattress, or both. If you choose to keep one of these two items, you will only be refunded for the item that is returned.

If you return the mattress, you will be expected to donate or recycle the mattress. The company does not pick up or haul-away a returned mattress. A refund will be issued once you have submitted a receipt of donation or recycling.

The Eight smart mattress is shipped for free within the continental United States. The mattress typically arrives within 7-10 days after it is ordered.

No installation or haul-away of your old mattress is offered as part of the delivery. The mattress and sleep tracker arrive in boxes on your doorstep. The mattress is compressed within plastic packaging, and once this packaging is removed, the mattress expands to reach its full size. It may take 24 hours to reach its full firmness.

This 10-year timeframe does not apply to the mattress covering or to the sleep tracker technology layer. The cover has a 2-year warranty, and the sleep tracker comes with a 1-year warranty.

Mattress Performance

It is typically easiest to think of the Eight smart mattress as two different parts. One part is the mattress itself, and the other part is the sleep tracker technology system. The mattress itself is a fairly straightforward design intended to provide a balanced mix between support and bounce. The sleep tracker offers an opportunity for the technology-inclined to gather more data about their sleep.

The Eight smart mattress provides support both through its memory foam layer and its latex-like comfort layer. Memory foam offers support through its ability to contour to the body’s pressure points while latex offers a feeling of more springiness or bounce.

One potential issue for some people may be that the sleep tracker provides a small buffer between the body and the mattress comfort layer. This has the potential to slightly reduce the responsiveness of these top layers of foam, especially for sleepers who weigh less and may put less pressure on the mattress in the first place.

The Eight smart mattress has not been on the market long enough to judge its durability over the long-term. The top 2” of the comfort layer has only 3 PCF density, which is less than the 3.5 PCF that we would typically prefer to see. Overall, though, most of the internal components are of roughly-average density, which should provide a reasonable level of durability.

It may also be useful to keep in mind that the technology layer is likely to have a shorter lifespan than the mattress itself. As a result, customers may need to purchase more than one sleep tracker to last the usable life of the mattress itself.

The Eight smart mattress is only offered in one firmness level. This is considered to be medium-firm, meaning that it falls somewhere around a 5-7 on the typical firmness scale.

Motion Transfer

While the latex-like comfort layer adds bounce to the mattress and may slightly reduce motion isolation when compared with traditional memory foam, most sleepers are unlikely to notice significant disruptions on the Eight smart mattress.

As with most foam mattresses, you can expect some slight initial smell after unboxing your mattress. This odor is not harmful, and it should go away within a few hours.

Sleeping Hot

Because of its use of a more resilient foam on top of memory foam, most sleepers do not find the Eight smart mattress to have serious issues when it comes to sleeping hot. In addition, the technology layer allows for people to have more control over bed temperature, which also works to reduce heat retention issues.

Because the top layer of this mattress is a latex-like material with more bounce, it should not cause the kind of sinking into the bed that can disrupt sexual activity on traditional memory foam mattresses.
