Many large mattress retailers have sought to get into the bed-in-a-box market, and the Cocoon by Sealy, launched in 2016, is a prime example. It is a straightforward foam mattress sold only online and delivered directly to the customer’s door.

Some of the key strengths of the Cocoon mattress include:

  • Simple design: all of the different types of mattresses and their features can be overwhelming for some people. For those shoppers, a straightforward design like the one featured in the Cocoon may hold a lot of appeal.
  • Backed by an established company: the direct-to-consumer mattress marketplace is populated by dozens of companies that have only been in existence for a few years. This may be of concern to some people who want to know that their mattress and warranty are backed by a company with an extensive history.

Potential drawbacks for the Cocoon mattress include

  • Mattress specifications are not disclosed: Sealy does not include any in-depth details about the composition of the Cocoon mattress. They do not list the specific thickness or density of the foam layers, which complicates the ability to judge the quality of the mattress.
  • Questionable customer service reputation: while Sealy does have a long history in the mattress business, some of that history involves a less-than-sterling reputation for customer relations. In fact, many of the companies that have thrived in the online mattress industry have done so because of customer dissatisfaction with traditional manufacturers like Sealy.

About the Cocoon Mattress

Cocoon Mattress Specifications

The Cocoon Classic and the Cocoon Chill have a very similar construction. Both mattresses are offered in both a soft and firm option with slightly different foam composition.

The top layer is made up of memory foam. The second layer is a transition layer, which is either softer or firmer depending on your comfort preference. The third layer is a support foam that also changes depending on your comfort selection. These layers have a fabric cover.

The Chill mattress is the same except for the cover, which has a phase change material in it. The phase change material is designed to try to absorb heat and prevent sleeping hot.

Sealy does not list detailed information about the full specifications of the Cocoon mattresses. For example, the company does not disclose the densities of the foams used in the support or comfort layers. This makes it very difficult to gauge the support and durability of the mattress, and it also makes it hard to comparison shop.

Where It’s Made

The Cocoon mattress is manufactured in the USA.

Buying Logistics

Where To Buy

The Cocoon mattress is available online directly from the company and through Amazon.

Sleep Trial / Refunds

Sealy offers a 100 night sleep trial for the Cocoon mattress. At any time during those first 100 nights, you can contact the company to return the mattress for a full refund. If you initiate a return, the company will pick up the mattress and donate it.

If you purchase the mattress from Amazon, the return policy and process may be different. It is important to check with Amazon and/or Sealy about the sleep trial and returns if purchased from a third party.

Sealy offers free delivery of the Cocoon mattress, which usually occurs within 5 to 7 business days after an order is placed.

Delivery does not include any setup or haul-away of your old mattress. Instead, the mattress is compressed, sealed in plastic, and delivered to your doorstep in a box. After you remove the mattress from the packaging, it expands to reach its full size.

Cocoon box

Sealy offers a 10-year limited warranty for the Cocoon. During this time, the company will replace a defective mattress. The exact warranty wording is not available on the company’s website, so we encourage you to request this in writing prior to purchasing this mattress.

Customer Service

Sealy is one of the largest and most well-known mattress companies in America. Traditionally, Sealy and similar retailers have had a poor reputation for their sales approaches and post-sales service, but it is clear that Sealy is hoping to create a different impression for the Cocoon mattress. Sealy has an F rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Mattress Performance

There are not a lot of bells and whistles associated with the Cocoon mattress from Sealy. It includes a memory foam comfort layer over transition and support foam. Whether this is an option worth considering likely depends on your preference for memory foam and how you perceive the Sealy company.

As a comfort layer, memory foam usually delivers a quality night’s sleep from a support perspective. The material contracts and expands based on the amount of pressure that is applied, which allows each part of the body to receive the appropriate amount of support.

While memory foam in general can provide excellent support, it is harder to know if this specific memory foam mattress will deliver because we don’t know the details of the memory foam or other foam layers.

The Cocoon mattress has not been on the market long enough to have any long term data about its durability. In addition, because we don’t know the foam specifications, we cannot say with any confidence that this mattress is built to stand the test of time.

Each of the two Cocoon mattresses are offered in two firmness levels: soft and firm. The soft generally is considered to be a 4-5 on the typical firmness scale while the firm is a 5-6.

Motion Transfer

Because the Cocoon has a memory foam comfort layer, it generally offers a high level of motion isolation. Memory foam is widely considered to be the most effective material for motion isolation.

The Cocoon usually has some new mattress smell after unboxing. This smell is not harmful but may last for a week or so before dissipating. Customers who are extremely smell-sensitive may prefer a mattress without significant foam layers.

Sleeping Hot

Memory foam, especially more plush memory foam, can cause people to sink deeply into the mattress. When this happens, it can cause heat buildup around the body and cause someone to sleep hot. While most sleepers don’t struggle with this issue, it can be a serious disruption for some people.

The Cocoon Chill mattress has the same specifications as the Cocoon Classic except that the cover also has a phase-change material. This material is designed to assist with preventing heat buildup and sleeping hot.

Memory foam mattresses can limit movement in bed because of the sinking or contouring feeling of the foam’s response to pressure. This limited movement can be a barrier to sexual activity, especially relative to mattresses with more bounce, such as latex mattresses or most innerspring mattresses.
