Overview

Casper launched in 2014 and is probably the best-known of the direct-to-consumer foam mattress companies. Many credit Casper with opening the door to the burgeoning number of online mattress options available now.

Some of the key strengths of the Casper mattress include:

  • Refined design: despite their success in being one of the first to market, Casper has not settled or stayed put. Instead, they have continued to refine their mattress design in order to expand its desirability for the greatest number of sleepers. This has included features intended to provide both essential support and bounce.
  • Comparatively long track record: many of the companies that sell mattresses online have been in business for less than a year, and in comparison, Casper has a longstanding reputation, including for its customer service.
  • 100 night sleep trial with Amazon: many of the mattresses sold through Amazon come with only a 30 day sleep trial, but Casper extends its 100 night trial to Amazon purchases.

Potential drawbacks for the Casper mattress include:

  • Only one firmness option: Casper is only offered in one firmness option, which could be an issue for people who have a strong preference for either a very firm or very soft mattress.
  • Less contouring and more motion transfer than traditional memory foam: in choosing to add more bounce to its comfort layers, the Casper necessarily reduces some of the benefits that come from the deep contouring of traditional memory foams. Some people find that their pressure relief is greater with classic memory foams, and those foams also offer greater motion isolation properties.

About the Casper Mattress

Casper Mattress Specifications

The Casper mattress is built with four separate layers. The top layer is made with 1.5” of open-cell foam. The second layer is 1.5” of memory foam. The third layer is 1.5” of a proprietary transition foam. The bottom layer is 5” of poly support foam.

Casper does not publish the density of these foam layers. The company lists this as proprietary information, and as such, we are unable to state definitively the density or ILD of these foams. This can make it harder to comparison shop or to truly understand the composition of the mattress.

Be aware that while this information is available for prior versions of the Casper mattress, this may not be up-to-date with what’s actually inside the Casper mattress you would buy today. As such, we have chosen not to publish that information in our Casper review here. Check back here, though, because if the company does publish this data, we will update our review.

Where It’s Made

The Casper mattress is manufactured in the USA.

Buying Logistics

Sleep Trial / Refunds

The Casper mattress comes with a 100 night sleep trial. If you aren’t satisfied with the mattress, you have up to 100 nights to get a full refund. If you decide to return the mattress, Casper arranges to have it picked up and donated or recycled.

If you purchase a Casper mattress through Amazon, your sleep trial is still 100 nights; however, any returns must be coordinated with Amazon rather than with Casper directly. If Amazon is unable to identify a charity to pick up your mattress, though, you may be responsible for either dropoff at a UPS location or the cost of a UPS pickup (deducted from your refund).

Delivery

After ordering, the Casper mattress typically ships within 1-2 days and then arrives 1-5 days after that via UPS Ground.

For standard delivery, no installation or haul-away services are included. Instead, a box with the mattress compressed within plastic packaging arrives at your doorstep. Once you open the packaging, the mattress decompresses and, according to Casper, should be ready to sleep on within minutes.

In a few select markets — New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco — Casper does offer white glove service. For an additional fee, the company will deliver the mattress and set it up in the room of your choice. A service is also available to haul away your old mattress. In many cases, this white glove service can be arranged for the same day a mattress is purchased.

Warranty

The Casper mattress comes with a 10-year warranty. During this time, the company will replace or repair your mattress if there are any defects in craftsmanship. Transportation and/or shipping costs associated with warranty repair or replacement is not covered under this warranty. You can find the full warranty terms at https://casper.com/warranty.

Customer Service

Casper has a strong reputation for customer service. As a pioneer in the direct-to-consumer mattress industry, Casper has been very visible and has dealt with perhaps more customers than any other company. Casper has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Mattress Performance

The Casper mattress is typically known for solid across-the-board performance that scores well on the key elements for most customers.

Keep in mind that Casper has modified their mattress several times over the past 3 years of being in business. This can make it challenging at times to know what to make of some reviews because they may not be applicable to the mattress that is available today. We have worked to apply our review to the most up-to-date offering from Casper.

Support

The Casper mattress has been re-designed several times to try to find a balance between contouring and bounce. The goal of the most recent design is to provide support where it’s needed but without any additional sink in the mattress. This balance works well for most sleepers who generally find this to be a very supportive mattress.

Durability

Because the Casper mattress has only been available for three years, there is no way that we can firmly state how it will hold up over 5 or 10 years of regular use. But testing by the company and by independent reviewers points to the Casper being a reliable and durable mattress.

Firmness

Casper offers only one level of firmness, which falls around a 6-7 on the typical firmness scale. For people who prefer a more plush or more firm feel, the Casper probably isn’t the right fit, but this mid-level firmness tends to be comfortable for sleepers in most sleeping positions. Most reviews of the Casper mattress have found this firmness rating to be accurate.

Motion Transfer

Because the most recent mattress model has more bounce than traditional memory foams, sleepers who share a bed should also expect less motion isolation from the Casper when compared to traditional memory foam. Despite this, the motion isolation properties of the Casper are likely to be sufficient for the vast majority of people but perhaps not for people who are extremely sensitive to movement of others in bed.

Offgassing

Like most foam mattresses, some smell can be expected after the Casper is unboxed, but this should not be persistent or extreme. It usually goes away within a few hours. Extremely smell-sensitive customers, though, may prefer a mattress made without any large foam layers, such as a traditional innerspring mattress.

Sleeping Hot

The Casper mattress has been designed largely to reduce the chances of sleeping hot. Its increased bounce and its open-cell foam are both features intended to prevent heat-inducing sink and heat retention in the foam. Very few customers report sleeping hot on the Casper.

Intimacy

The Casper mattress should not obstruct sexual activity. Its bounce and resiliency contribute to a surface that facilitates movement on the mattress.
