Brentwood Home makes a number of mattresses that are sold through various retail outlets. The Cedar mattress is a hybrid model that features innerspring coils, Dunlop latex, and other natural materials. It is only sold through the company’s website.

Some of the key strengths of the Brentwood Home Cedar mattress include:

  • Green design: instead of using the same traditional materials as many mattress makers, Brentwood Home employs more natural materials in the Cedar mattress including natural latex, coconut husks, New Zealand wool, and organic cotton.
  • Two-layered latex comfort layer: the mattress has 4” total of latex in its comfort layer, and this latex is of a solid density level. The use of two types of latex helps give a more nuanced feel and helps prevent heat retention in the topmost layers.

Potential drawbacks for the Brentwood Home Cedar mattresses include:

  • Higher price tag: because of its use of specialty materials and its complex design, the price of the Cedar mattress is slightly higher than some comparable mattress types on the market.

We also have a review for the Brentwood Home Oceano and Ojai mattresses if you’d like to learn more about their other offerings.

Mattress Performance

The Cedar mattress includes several design elements that deliver a high level of performance. In addition, it is built with many natural materials that many customers may prefer when compared to more synthetic or chemical-based products.

Support

The primary support for the body in this mattress comes from the topmost layer of latex. This 2” layer is built with different amounts of responsiveness (in 3 different “zones”) so that it can more effectively contour to the body. At the same time, latex remains a bouncier, more resilient material that does not permit excessive sink into the mattress. As a result, most customers find this to do an excellent job of maintaining spinal alignment.

Durability

Latex in general is a durable material, and the top two latex layers in this mattress are high-density, which should help them hold up well over many years of nightly use. A thick layer of innerspring coils should also provide a solid base for this mattress that allows it to easily provide 6-8 years or more of great sleep.

Firmness

This mattress is solidly medium – a 5 – on the typical firmness scale of 1-10. It is not available in any other firmness levels.

Motion Transfer

The bounce from the latex and innerspring coils make this mattress somewhat more prone to transferring motion than some other mattress types (such as traditional memory foam). However, the fiber fill at the top can help to provide a softer feel that absorbs and insulates some of this motion. For most customers, it is unlikely that motion transfer will be a significant problem with the Cedar mattress.

Offgassing

After it has been compressed, latex may give off some initial smell when it is first installed in your home, but this smell should fade away quickly.

Sleeping Hot

Several design elements of the Cedar mattress can help to reduce issues of heat retention. First, the wool in the topmost layer can help to wick moisture and provide general temperature regulation. Second, latex, given its resilience, tends to have fewer issues with the deep sinking feeling that can restrict cooling airflow around the body. Third, the latex in this mattress is built with holes and grooves to allow more air to pass through it, reducing any tendency toward heat retention.

Intimacy

The springiness provided by both the latex layers and by the pocketed innerspring coils make this mattress good for sex as it does not restrict motion on top of the bed.
