Overview

The BedInABox brand claims to be the originator of this style of mattress that is delivered compressed to a person’s front door. The company, which started shipping mattresses in this way in 2006, offers several memory foam mattresses and one hybrid. This review focuses on the hybrid option, the Adagio mattress.

Some of the key strengths of the BedInABox Adagio hybrid mattress include:

  • Long track record: as a widely-acknowledged originator of this category of the mattress industry, BedInABox has an extensive track record of customer satisfaction and customer service.
  • Flippable firmness options: this hybrid mattress is designed to offer two different levels of firmness depending on which side of the mattress is facing upward. Both sides get support from the innerspring coils, but sleepers can choose either a medium or firm feel.

Potential drawbacks for the BedInABox Adagio hybrid mattress include:

  • Unknown mattress specifications: BedInABox does not publish information about the densities of the foams used in this mattress or much detail about the construction of the innerspring coils. This limits our ability to truly assess the quality of this mattress.
  • 60-day requirement for sleep trial: while BedInABox offers a 120 night sleep trial, they require that you keep the mattress for 60 days before initiating a return. For customers who are unsure if they will like the feel of memory foam, this requirement may be a disincentive to trying the BedInABox models.

We also have a review for the BedInABox memory foam mattresses if you’d like to learn more about their other offerings.

About the BedInABox Adagio Mattress

BedInABox Adagio Mattress Specifications

The Adagio mattress is designed with six layers and is built to be reversible and offer two firmness options. The top layer is a rayon cover designed to be smoother and to retain less heat. The second layer is 1” of specialty foam with properties of memory foam and latex. The third layer has 1” of transition polyfoam, and the fourth layer has 2” of support foam. These second, third, and fourth layers make up the main mattress comfort layer. The fifth layer is 7” of foam-encased pocketed coils. The sixth layer is 1” of foam sewn into a quilted cover.

Buying Logistics

Where to Buy

BedInABox mattresses are sold online through the company’s website and through many major retailers like Walmart and Amazon. Please be aware that pricing and availability may vary when sold through third party retailers.

Sleep Trial / Refunds

BedInABox offers a 120 night sleep trial; however, they do not accept any returns within the first 60 days after delivery. This is different from almost any other online direct-to-consumer mattress company. After the first 60 days and up until 120 days, you can return the mattress and receive a full refund.

Please be aware that the return policy and procedure may be different if your purchase a BedInABox mattress from a third party retailer. Typically, in those cases, the retailer’s terms and conditions apply.

Delivery

BedInABox offers free shipping, and orders are usually delivered within 4-7 business days after an order is placed.

All BedInABox mattresses are delivered to your doorstep with the mattress compressed and sealed in plastic packaging. After you remove the mattress from the packaging, it decompresses to reach its full size.

Delivery does not include any installation services or haul-away of your old mattress.

Customer Service

BedInABox has an excellent reputation for customer service formed over a decade in the direct-to-consumer mattress industry. The company also has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Mattress Performance

Through its use of both innerspring coils and various foam layers, the BedInABox hybrid attempts to achieve the goals of support, comfort, and flexibility with regard to a person’s firmness preference.

Support

In general, hybrid mattresses of this type provide a sound level of support. Innerspring coils typically offer a strong base, and responsive foams can then eliminate pressure points through their contouring to the body. However, mattresses with thinner comfort layers — including this mattress, especially on its softer side — may provide inadequate support. This can be especially true for heavier sleepers or people with pronounced pressure points based on their body type or sleeping positions.

Durability

The BedInABox company typically has a strong reputation for its mattresses and has more experience in this market than almost any other company. In addition, there are not many reports of major durability problems with the Adagio mattress. That said, the Adagio hybrid is one of BedInABox’s newest models, and as a result, there is less information about its long-term durability. In addition, because BedInABox has not published detailed specifications for the mattress, it is harder to assess whether the materials are likely to stand the test of time.

Firmness

The two sides of the Adagio mattress have a different firmness, which allows customers to choose between which option better fits their preference. One side is medium firm, falling at around a 5-6 on the firmness scale, and the other side is extra firm, coming it at a 7-8 on the firmness scale.

Motion Transfer

The amount of motion transfer from this mattress may change depending on which side is being slept on. A mattress with a thinner comfort layer and less firmness is more likely to cause significant motion transfer and potentially disrupt another person in the bed.

Offgassing

There have been some reports of offgassing and noticeable smells from this mattress after it is delivered and unboxed. This is not harmful and usually dissipates within a few days, but customers who are very smell-sensitive may want to opt for a mattress that does not have multiple foam layers.

Sleeping Hot

Most hybrid mattresses like the Adagio don’t have significant problems with sleeping hot. This is because the innerspring coils tend to prevent someone from sinking too deeply into the mattress in a way that would cause heat retention. Coils also usually do not retain heat as much as many foams.

Intimacy

The spring from the coils and the firmness of the foam layers of the mattress should be sufficient to prevent any major barriers to sexual activity.
