Overview

The Aviya mattress came to market in early 2016 and features a hybrid design with both innerspring coils and several layers of foam.

Some of the key strengths of the Aviya mattress include:

  • Base layer of individually-wrapped innerspring coils: individually-wrapped coils typically provide an excellent combination of support and responsiveness and can help to increase edge support and motion isolation.
  • White glove delivery option: Aviya offers full setup and haul-away of your old mattress, which is a great option for customers who want the simplicity of white glove delivery.

Potential drawbacks for the Aviya mattress include:

  • Questionable foam materials: all of the foam layers in the Aviya mattress use the same foam with a density of 1.8 PCF. This is less than we prefer to see in the comfort layers of a mattress and raises questions about the expected performance and durability of this mattress.
  • Limited track record: the Aviya mattress has not been on the market for a long enough time period to rigorously analyze either its performance or the company’s ability to respond to customer issues. More time is needed before we can safely evaluate Aviya’s track record.

The fourth layer is a layer of individually-wrapped, 15 gauge innerspring coils. The bottom layer is another 1” of foam.

Each of the foam layers in the mattress has a density of 1.8 PCF. The company does not list the specific thickness of each individual foam layer in its mattress specifications.

Buying Logistics

Where To Buy

The Aviya mattress is available online through the company’s website and through Amazon.

Sleep Trial / Refunds

Aviya offers a 100 night sleep trial during which you can return the mattress for a full refund. The company asks that you try the mattress for two to three weeks before making a return, but there is no required minimum amount of time that must pass before you can initiate a return. if you aren’t satisfied with the mattress, Aviya will coordinate pickup of the mattress as part of the return process.

Mattresses purchased via Amazon may have different terms and conditions for returns and also may have a different return process. It is important to check the fine print or to check with Amazon and/or Aviya before purchasing to confirm any details about the sleep trial.

Delivery

The Aviya mattress is shipped for free and usually arrives within 7-10 business days after it is ordered.

Unlike many other direct-to-consumer mattresses, the Aviya is not a bed-in-a-box model. It is not delivered compressed but is instead delivered at its full size.

Standard shipping includes the delivery team bringing the mattress inside your front door. For an additional fee of $99, they will setup the mattress in the room where you would like it to be. For another $60, they will haul away your old mattress. The total cost for full white glove delivery and haul-away is $159.

Warranty

The Aviya mattress comes with a 10-year warranty. During this time, the company will repair or replace any mattress with defects in materials or manufacturing. You can read the full warranty terms online at http://www.aviyamattress.com/pages/warranty.

Customer Service

The Aviya company has not been in the industry long enough to have a full measure of its performance when it comes to customer support and service. While the company — like most in this field — expresses a serious customer-focused orientation, we do not have enough data to comment on the customer experience in practice. The company does not have a rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Mattress Performance

The Aviya mattress is a hybrid, which means that it involves a support core of innerspring coils on top of which additional support is provided by foam comfort layers.

In general, hybrid mattresses can deliver a lot of excellent benefits, and the Aviya shares many similar characteristics with most hybrids. Our primary concern with the Aviya is that it uses a basic foam with only average density for each foam layer. This may make the mattress less supportive and less durable than many other options on the market.

Support

Hybrid mattresses usually offer a high level of support thanks to the underlying resilience of innerspring coils. Foam comfort layers can enhance this support through greater responsiveness and contouring.

Our concern with the support level of the Aviya are threefold. First, lower-density foams often do not hold up as well, especially for heavier sleepers or for people with serious pressure points. Second, a lower-density foam is more likely to indent or sag over time, which threatens the overall performance of the mattress. Third, the foams used in the Aviya are not especially responsive types of foam, which may reduce the contouring benefit found in most hybrid mattresses.

Durability

There is no long-term data on the performance of the Aviya mattress, so we cannot state conclusively whether it will perform well over many years of regular use. However, as stated above, the use of foams with a density of 1.8 PCF, especially in the comfort layers where they will receive the most wear-and-tear, could threaten the long term durability of this mattress.

Firmness

The Aviya mattress is offered in three different firmness levels. On the typical firmness scale, the Plush is a 2-3, the Luxury Firm is a 5-6, and the Firm is 8-9.

Motion Transfer

The Aviya mattress does not use memory foam, which is widely considered to have the most effective motion isolation abilities. However, it does use individually-wrapped innerspring coils, and these are often helpful in limiting motion transfer. Overall, the Aviya should not pose motion transfer issues for most sleepers, but people who are extremely motion-sensitive may prefer a mattress with greater contouring properties.

Offgassing

New mattress smells are most common when a mattress has been compressed for shipping, but the Aviya mattress is delivered without any compression. As a result, you can expect little or no odor from the Aviya mattress.

Sleeping Hot

Usually, customers find that hybrid mattresses like the Aviya do not sleep hot. This is because the innerspring core helps to prevent a person from sinking too deeply into the foam. Because of the lower-density foams used in the Aviya, we have some greater concern about sleeping hot, especially for heavier people who may sink more deeply into the mattress. Overall, though, the Aviya is likely to have fewer heat retention issues than traditional memory foam and its intense contouring properties.

Intimacy

When it comes to sexual activity on this mattress, the support and comfort layers may be working at cross purposes. Usually, an innerspring core offers a springiness that facilitates movement and prevents people from feeling stuck in the mattress. However, the foam quality in the comfort layers may permit more sink when strong, consistent pressure is applied. Customers looking for an optimal mattress for sex are likely to prefer a latex or innerspring model.
