Standard Mattress Sizes Guide
It’s always good to know about standard mattress sizes when purchasing a mattress for the home. Each size comes with its own set of pros and cons and understanding this will help consumers come up with the right decision as to which mattress to opt for. After all, a mattress costs a considerable amount of money and as such, it can be regarded as an investment.
There are four basic mattress sizes: twin, double, queen and king.
Single
Also known as the twin, this is the smallest among the standard mattress sizes. At a width of 39 inches, this is a suitable choice for children’s rooms and multi-user guest rooms. While an adult can comfortably sleep on it, those who need more space to move around will find this too cramped for their taste.
Double
The full size mattress is just as long as the twin but it is fifteen inches wider. At a width of 54 inches, the double sized mattress is a good choice for individuals who need a lot of sleeping space. Many couples tend to go for this mattress as a first choice thinking that it would be more than enough to sleep them both. Most people, however, will find this cramped for a couple bed and are more apt to purchase a larger sized mattress.
Queen
When it comes to standard mattress sizes the queen is the second largest one available in the market. It is also the most common choice among couples especially in this generation when living spaces continue to shrink. The queen is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long and is ideal for smaller master bedrooms. It should comfortably accommodate two adults, each one is provided with a thirty-inch wide of sleeping space.
King
Aptly named, the king is the largest mattress that is readily available in the market today. The standard size is just as long as the queen although this is sixteen inches wider. This mattress offers more than enough sleeping space for two adults. It is a great choice for master bedrooms especially in households with little children who tend to jump into their parents’ bed every morning. Sheets for the king can be quite expensive but they are not uncommon.
New sizes
Over the years, new standard mattress sizes are being developed due to the demand for custom-made products. The single mattress, for instance, has a longer version – the twin XL. This mattress is ideal for college dorms and other similar facilities as it is designed to sleep an adult. The Olympic queen adds more sleeping space with its 66-inch wide dimension. And California king is currently considered the longest mattress available these days.
The only downside with these additional mattress sizes is that finding sheets for them can be a challenge since they have still yet to attract much consumer attention. Custom-made bedding may be required for such mattresses.
It is important to be familiar with standard mattress sizes and their dimensions to ensure that you’re getting the right product that will suit your specific circumstances. Shopping for sheets is also easier if you know the size of the bed that you’re going to work with.
