Your first decision is the easy one… what size mattress do you need? If you’ve never bought a mattress before, they come in twin, twin extra large, full, queen, California king and king size. 

Next, you need to choose a comfort level. If a 1 is ultra-firm and a 10 is ultra-soft, where do you fall in the comfort scale? Imagine that ultra-firm is like sleeping on your floor, and ultra-soft is like sleeping on a cloud. Both extremes are impossible in a real mattress. But if you want something comfy yet with firm support, you may fall into a 3 or 4, while if you like to sleep on a feather bed you may prefer something along the lines of an 8 or 9. 

Now it’s time to look at different models. Since you know what comfort level you want, your salesperson or online guide should be able to point you in the direction of a few companies that make mattresses that would fit your criteria. Online, you have the opportunity to search name brand sites to get all the information on any mattresses you are considering, then you can find them at any of several discount mattress shops.
