Baby Mattress Reviews – How To Pick The Right One
Your sweet little angel
Do you realize that a baby spends almost three-fourths of the time sleeping alone for the first one year? That is how vital sleep for a baby is. We are born immature by natural design. Not all our organs are fully functioning and developed. In selecting your baby mattress, consider that your baby is going to lie down on it for an average of 18 hours a day.
There are various factors you need to consider when buying baby mattress. Foremost are firmness and size. Take note that a very soft baby mattress may pose risk to your child. Too soft surface will not be able to support the entire weight. The body tends to lose its original shape and, instead, conform to that of your baby’s body. When this happens, your baby is exposed to potential suffocation and, worse, lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Size plays also an important role. If smaller than the crib itself, the mattress may leave extra space in corners which may trap your kid.
Basic types
Modern baby mattresses are basically made of two types of materials, namely: foam and spring coil. Foam mattresses are likely to be lighter in weight. They are also very resilient against water contamination. Some spilled liquid baby foods on spring coil may damage the inner coils, especially if they are not made of high grade steel. With good quality foam material, this type of baby mattresses are likely to retain their shapes throughout the years.
Growing and increasingly active babies may less likely jump on a firm mattress like a trampoline. Baby mattresses with spring coils inside are more “springy”. When unsupervised, babies jumping on them may fall over their cribs. Recycled baby mattresses of the spring coil type may become dangerous with the natural wear and tear of the cloth wrapping the coils inside. There are few reported cases of babies being pricked by the metal points from the coils coming out of the padding. Of course, you do not want this to happen to your little angel.
You don’t want me cry
Since you cannot see what is inside the mattress, make sure you take a careful evaluation before buying. Considering asking a sales attendant but do not rely alone on the information given. Unlike adult mattress, softness is not necessary for babies. When inside the store, try to squeeze a little on the surface. You may also put your palm on it and if it bounces back easily, you are getting a very good foam baby mattress. Babies are born with more bones than us. As they grown older, some of them combine together until we end up having 206 of them. A firm mattress, usually the denser ones, is likely to retain its own shape. It will not alter the rapid growth and development of our babies. Many studies have shown that a baby growing up with poor posture are likely to develop chronic back pains later.
For spring coil mattress, considering asking the number of layers inside. The more layers of spring coils inside, the firmer the mattress is and the better it is.
There are other features that you need to consider aside from size and firmness. Check if the cover is made of fabric. Pediatricians would prefer the ones made of fabric as against those made of vinyl. The former tends to breathe more than the latter. Some trendy brands offer you covers with anti-bacterial properties. If this option will not cost you that much, you may buy it. Take note, however, that this feature will not entirely prevent the growth of these microorganisms. At most, it will only retard their growth. Proper hygiene is still important.
Next time you go to a baby store, make sure that both your baby’s comfort and safety should be your prime considerations.
